Retail Trust launches £9 million Extra Care retirement facility in Derby

The Retail Trust’s £9 million brand new Extra Care facility, Cedar House, on their Leylands retirement estate opened recently. Guests included Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant for the County of Derbyshire, William Tucker, retailers Bennetts, Next, John Lewis and Morrisons, Derby College and Sean Marshall, the Mayor of Derby who unveiled the commemoration plaque to the 160 present.

Retail Trust’s investment in Derby not only offers sheltered accommodation in the Estate’s cottages, but the brand new facility now offers 38 affordable high quality Extra Care flats so residents can live independently with the added benefit of 24 hour care provided by Derby City Council.

After the plaque unveiling the Mayor and Lord-Lieutenant, both former retailers, were given a tour of the newly refurbished Community Hall, the historic Eborn House as well as the brand new facilities on offer to residents; coffee shop, restaurant, bar, shop, bowling green, activity room, library, computer room, hairdressing/beauty salon and health room. We were impressed to learn that all of the facilities are available for the general public and local community to hire.

Councillor Ruth Skelton. Cabinet Member for Adult and Health Services at Derby City Council said:

“This is a fantastic new high quality facility for the City. The Council has a strong tradition of working in partnership with the Retail Trust in the city. We have strengthened our partnership through creating this facility and jointly commissioning the personal care service for residents, in the new extra care flats. This development adds to the housing options available for older people to keep them independent for longer, which is a major objective for the Council. I am confident the new facility will be a big success and I would like to thank Retail Trust for the investment they have made in Derby.”

Nigel J L Rothband, CEO, Retail Trust said:

“The atmosphere here today at Derby is electric. We’re delighted to be providing Extra Care facilities in Derby because it means we can look after even more people who have given their lives to retail. The facilities and activities are second to none so residents can be part of a caring community and have support on hand when they need it.”

The Broadway Action Group wish the Retail Trust every success with the redeveloped facilities.
